Green Daddy, Green Thumb

This Father's Day treat your man or pops to a green or eco-friendly gift. You can keep it very simple, men are easy. Recycle your Mother's Day card (if you received one) by writing on the opposite side. If they are in the market for a new lawn mower this season, consider an electric lawn mower. The best on the market is the Remington PowerMower MPS6017A electric mower. Pros: No more gas!!! Removable 60-volt battery, quiet operation, easy to use, 9-inch rear wheels, padded grip handle, corded option, Boost mode, 8-position single-lever deck height adjuster, 3-in-1 mowing capability Cons: Doesn't bag as well as a gas mower.

Other gift ideas can be found at Greenzer.com. Hope you have a great weekend together!

Clothes drying the old fashion way!

One of Fred's favorite customers, Tera, sent us this photo. Mydryer She prefers to dry her Organic Fred tee the old fashion way, on a blossoming apple tree. We met Tera at the Green Festival in Seattle last month. We were showcasing our newest logo, Organic Beauty. We only brought a limited number of samples and sold out quickly. Tera really loved the logo and the feel of the organic cotton. She contacted us right away and we were finally able to rush her a Fred shirt of her own. Thanks for sharing your picture Tera and helping to spread the word.

The Ultimate in Green Transportation

Next month, in the quaint city of Port Jervis, New York, young environmentalists will participate in a race. Their mode of transportation is the soap box car and the race is the Port Jervis Soap Box Derby. Not familiar with the soap box? Do you remember Alfalfa? He drove the Little Rascals soap box car "The Blur".

Organic Fred is sponsoring a car and a driver, number 7376. The winner of each division (Stock, Super Stock, and Masters) is invited to compete for scholarships and prizes at the 71st All-American Soap Box Derby at the end of July in Akron, Ohio.

We hope all of the drivers enjoy great speed and momentum but most of all we are glad events such as this still exist around the country to promote honesty, education, and sportsmanship.

GO TEAM FRED!

Breakfast of Champions - Fred Style!

Not just because we are told to do it or to keep our cholesterol down, but because it tastes awesome. Oatmeal - we all know how healthy it is for your heart and just because it is healthy, does not mean it has to taste bad.  Our favorite oatmeal is Nature’s Path Organic Instant Oatmeal in the Flax’N Oats.  This oatmeal paired with an organic vanilla soy milk is the perfect breakfast.  If you are feeling a little wild and crazy, toss in a few organic berries or walnuts for more heart healthy and antioxidant benefits.  You will be truly satisfied with this healthy breakfast full of fiber and heart healthy oats. (www.naturespath.com)

Try it for two weeks and you will be hooked.

Organic Cooking Gets Chicks!!!

Now that I have your attention. It is ok to experiment in the kitchen, shoot - we do it all the time. When the occassion requires a serious attempt at an edible and healthy meal, Team Fred hits the books - Cookbooks. Don't go it alone, here are some of Organic Fred’s favorite vegetarian cookbooks. These cookbooks work really well with our lifestyle and especially with our amazing, weekly organic veggies supplied by our local CSA-Bull Run Vegetable Farm.

a.       Quick-Fix Vegetarian by Robin Robertson (www.robinrobertson.com)

b.      Betty Crocker Easy Everyday Vegetarian: Meatless Main Dishes You’ll Love!

c.       The Essential Eating Well Cookbook edited by Patsy Jamieson  (www.eatingwell.com)

d.      Eating Well Healthy in a Hurry by Jim Romanoff (www.eatingwell.com)

e.       Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero (www.theppk.com and http://vegancupcakes.wordpress.com)

And, okay, we know, the last one does not technically require whole veggies, but you have got to check this one out!  The photographs alone will motivate you to dust off your sifter and get baking!!!

No fancy chef hat required!

Warning - Check the bottom of your shoes

Stop ignoring the fact that your dog did his business on your neighbors lawn. Pick up the crap people and save us all from scraping the bottom of our shoes with a stick. Here is a tip, bring a couple of bags with you on the evening walks and clean up after Fido. Try BioBags - these biodegradable bags are great for your pet’s waste and home countertop compost as well.  These bags are made out of corn starch and as such, they are 100% biodegradable.  We at Organic Fred have been using BioBags for quite some time now and definitely appreciate their limited impact on landfills and the environment as a whole.  For our mini-kitchen compost, we just throw our veggie and fruit scraps, coffee grinds and egg shells into our ceramic compost pail which we line with the BioBag liner.  When our countertop compost becomes full, we just take the entire bag out to the compost pile in our backyard and toss it in!  We have found that this makes the process so much easier and a lot cleaner.  The same goes for our little poochie since they make these amazing biodegradable pet waste bags.  We assume we don’t need to fill you on the rest of those details!!!  You can get a great deals on BioBags, check out some of their retailers at www.biobagusa.com.

Be one of us, pick it up for the full effect!

What is that smell?

Spring is in the air. Well, maybe not where you are living but thanks to global warming we had a seventy degree day and it was great. Except for the cause.

Couple of pics for this month to get you in the mood. Check out our good friends who inspire us to be better citizens.

Mark, Jim, and the gang at the Organic Mechanics are working hard to bring you quality organic soil for your spring planting season. We exchanged shirts for dirt last year, we definitely made out in that deal. The last time we spoke Mark mentioned that they will be featured in many stores in 2008 including Wegmans!

While you are waiting for the tulips to bloom you can surf the net and visit the Natural Organic Guide, wonderful human beings. They are a new website so please check it out for new ideas and exciting products. You can contact Kathy at info@naturalorganicguide.com, tell her Organic Fred sent you and that will get you nothing.

Team Fred was recently in Richmond, Virginia for the 32nd annual home and garden show. We met so many great customers and interesting people, it was a blast. One of the things we ran into during our trip was what to do with our recyclables. I am sure a lot of people have the same problem during business trips or vacations when you don't know where to place your recyclables and refuse to use a regular trash. We wound up using one of our Organic Fred grocery bags as a recycling bin until we got home and put it in our curbside containers. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas on what can be done to feed our addiction to recycling during travel?
